Frequently asked questions (FAQ) for customs brokers in Australia

Why should I use a customs broker?

Customs brokers help clear your goods in a timely and efficient manner. We simplify your importing and exporting program to ensure your shipment arrives on time.

When is the best time to talk to your customs broker?

We highly recommend you speak with your customs broker prior to the
arrival of your shipments.

Do I need an import permit?

Most of the goods imported into Australia do not require an import permit to facilitate clearance; however, there are some categories of goods where an import permit is required. Call us on 03 9329 3155 or contact us online and we are happy to help.

Why do I have to pay GST?

GST is a broad-based and visible consumption tax applied to most goods and services consumed in Australia by the Government and is payable at the time of importation. Imported goods do not have GST included in their purchase price.

What is the GST calculated on?

GST is calculated at 10% of the Value of the Taxable Import (VoTI). The VoTI is calculated by adding the Customs Value (CV) + the Duty + International Transport and Insurance (T&I). Speak to our expert brokers to ensure the accurate calculation of your GST.

If goods are second hand do I still need to pay duty?

All goods, including new or second hand items, commercial or private, have to be assessed for duty/GST payment. However, duty is only applicable if the value of the goods are more than AUS$1000, except for alcohol and tobacco products.

Talk to our expert customs clearance brokers for reliable duty and GST advice. We are happy to help you.
